Mayfield, Kentucky is a small city located in Graves County. Mayfield is the largest city in Graves County and serves as the seat of government. Mayfield is located in an area that was occupied by Native American Indians before the arrival of Europeans. In 1818, Andrew Jackson and Isaac Shelby purchased large amounts of land from the Chickasaw people. This purchase is known as the Jackson Purchase. In 1821, Mayfield was established as the county seat of Graves County and by 1823 the county was formally organized.
