Eddyville is a small city located in far-western Kentucky. It is positioned within the boundaries of Lyon County and serves as the seat of government. Also, Eddyville is the largest city in Lyon County. According to the United States Census Bureau, approximately 2,572 people lived in Eddyville in 2016. The second largest city in Lyon County is Kuttawa which is home to almost 700 people.
Original inhabitants of the area in which Eddyville is located were Native American Indians of the Chickasaw tribe. After the Jackson Purchase in 1818, European settlers began moving into the area in large numbers. However, Eddyville was settled before the Jackson Purchase. In 1798, Eddyville was established and named for eddies found in nearby Cumberland River. In 1799, Eddyville became the county seat of Livingston County. The community served as the seat of government for one more county before it officially became the county seat of Lyon County in 1854.
